OMRDD has convened a Summer Camp Committee to develop recommendations for actions that are intended to protect adult campers. There is a Safeguarding Alert, Choosing a Camp for Adults with Developmental Disabilities to help families, individuals, providers and advocates to make decisions about summer camp.
The OMRDD Adult Overnight Summer Camp Self Survey is sent to camps known to be regularly serving adults with developmental disabilities with a request for "self-survey" before the beginning of camp season. The Self-Survey includes core indicators that solicit information on the basic health and safety protections considered absolutely necessary for individuals. The Self-Survey also includes other questions that concern elements of camp that are useful when evaluating camps for specific campers, or are considered important for most campers
The OMRDD Directory of Adult Overnight Summer Camps includes camps whose self-survey results indicate that they meet the basic health and safety needs tested by core indicator questions (in bold letters). OMRDD will conduct site visits of camps on the list during the camp season, using the OMRDD Adult Overnight Summer Camp Checklist. The results of these site visits will be used to confirm that basic health and safety protections are actually in place at camp. If any of the basic health and safety protections are not in place, the camp will be removed form the OMRDD Directory of Adult Overnight Summer Camps until the deficiency has been satisfactorily addressed.
Inclusion in the OMRDD Directory of Adult Overnight Summer Camps is not to be interpreted as endorsement of the camp or the services provided by OMRDD, or that the camp is safe or can meet the needs of any particular camper.
However, the information about the camp contained in the Directory can be useful in evaluating whether the camp is suitable for individual campers.
Individuals may sometimes be interested in attending camps that are designed to serve individuals without developmental disabilities, and that are not on the OMRDD Directory of Adult Overnight Summer Camps. Decisions must be made on a case-by-case basis to assure that the camper's needs can be met at camps which do not provide supports and services that are typically necessary for individuals who live in certified settings. While OMRDD may not be evaluating these camps, they may nonetheless provide safe environments in certain circumstances. These camps might be appropriate for individuals who are more independent or who attend camp with family members or others who can provide necessary supports.
NOTE: The Directory only includes camps within New York State, and only includes overnight summer camps serving adults (at least 18 years old).
The Summer Camp Committee also developed the DDSO Summer Camp Approval Form. This form may be adapted for use by agency, staff, families, and individuals when planning for summer camp.
